The Democratization of Industrial Automation and Robotics

As robots get more affordable and accessible for a wider range of companies, logistics providers are finding innovative new ways to incorporate them into their operations in order to help shippers run streamlined, industrial automated supply chains.
Up until the last few years, industrial automation and robotics were designed around large-scale, homogenous products flowing through huge facilities. Now there’s literally “something for everyone” as more affordable, capable, and flexible robotics and automation solutions make their way into the nation’s fulfillment centers, distribution centers (DCs), and warehouses.
“Where it used to cost hundreds of thousands—or even millions—of dollars to develop automated facilities,” says John Stikes, DB Schenker’s Director of Innovation and eCommerce, “that price has come down into the tens of thousands of dollars, effectively putting automation within reach for organizations of all sizes.”
Cost of industrial automation depends heavily on the scope. Due to significantly improved scalability compared to solutions from the past equipment, can be selected exactly to the needs, so there is no issue of the redundant capacity. At a later stage, it can be flexibly adjusted to growing volumes. In the world where workforce availability is getting more and more scarce hiring new employees might be challenging. Increasing throughput capacity of automated installation quite often is easier and carries less risk.
Benefits are not limited to costs. Automation can also contribute to sales. One influence is obvious: Improved productivity enables companies to offer more affordable products and services. There is another factor though which is often overlooked. Industrial Automation solutions offer high and consistent quality and mistakes are very rare. As a result, the experience of the end-customer is improved, and that is a clear competitive advantage.
From Manual to Automated
Making the business case for automation even more compelling is the fact that today’s robots are collaborative and able to safely work with humans, easier to program and deploy, able to learn various tasks (thanks to the advent of artificial intelligence and machine learning), and more adaptable.
“A radical transformation in industrial automation has occurred over the past decade, and it’s as much a technological shift as a consequence of the changing economy, one increasingly reliant on small runs, fast shipping, and nimble operations,” ZDNet points out. “A new generation of robots reflects these changes. They are quickly deployable, task-agnostic, smaller than their clunky forebears, and can work alongside humans outside of cages.”
According to MHI, 34 percent of companies are looking to robotics and automation to improve overall supply chain efficiencies—namely by handling manual tasks like picking, sorting, inspecting, storing, handling, and classifying products. Five years from now, the industry group expects robotics and automation adoption to rise to 53 percent.
With the increase in robotics and automation application, people wonder whether all humans will be put out of work and replaced by robots. This is not what has happened so far as new technologies create more workplaces than they reduce. Automation makes companies more competitive, causing growth, which requires more, not fewer, employees. It also can replace humans in heavy, tedious and repetitive activities, enabling them to work in different areas.
Rapid Pace of Change
Pointing to collaborative robots—so named because they can be deployed to work alongside humans—as the fastest-growing segment of industrial automation, ZDNet says automation no longer requires the adoption of hundreds (or even dozens) of robots.
In fact, robotics manufacturer Yaskawa Motoman estimates that 95 percent of its robotics customers have five robots or fewer.
“Compare that to the old days of industrial automation,” ZDNet adds, “when dozens or hundreds of task-specific robots were required to produce a finished product and you begin to see the magnitude of the shift.”
Stikes of DB Schenker agrees and says the demise of many Fortune 500 companies could have something to do with the increased interest in automation. “In the last few years, we’ve seen a remarkable shift to flexible automation in response to the fact that 52 percent of the Fortune 500 companies don’t even exist anymore. They’re either out of business or have been merged into different companies,” says Stikes. “That’s a true testament to the rapid pace of change in business. It’s just incredible.”
Making Things “Smaller”
As they help shippers leverage automation and robotics, logistics providers are also starting to make things smaller, and are looking for ways to shorten the overall supply chain while still providing shippers with highly-customizable, value-added services.
Achieving that goal requires multiple process flows and facilities—many of which still rely on large-scale automation that’s been in place for decades. “Those large-scale installations are still an important part of the market,” says Stikes. “But at the same time, automation is now available for most companies out there, instead of just very large, very static, process-oriented companies.”
Calling this trend “the democratization of automation and robotics,” Stikes says it’s effectively broadening out the marketplace and pushing companies to think more carefully about exactly what they implement and how they use it in their operations. E-commerce companies, for example, have invested heavily in automated equipment that helps them manage the high velocity of small orders that customers expect within one or two days.
Exciting Things Ahead
Thanks to the flexible nature of today’s industrial automation and robotics solutions, those investments can be leveraged across different selling platforms—not just e-commerce. “We’re working with our partners to develop capacity with flexible autonomous vehicles, robots, and other innovations,” says Stikes, “to take strategies for one vertical and cross over to other verticals that are largely untouched from a small-scale automation standpoint, such as automotive and aerospace.”
Looking ahead, Stikes says logistics providers like DB Schenker will be looking for ways to provide expanded services to their customers. The democratization of robotics and automation will help them achieve those goals while also putting more power in the hands of shippers who need to differentiate themselves in an increasingly competitive marketplace.
