The Best Tacos in Downtown LA (and Beyond)

If you're in Los Angeles for 2017, you have to try the city's unofficial dish. LA is famous for its tacos, but with thousands of Mexican restaurants, food trucks, and hole-in-the-walls, how can you find the best?

We asked Scott Porter, of the hit Instagram account @Searchfortheperfecttaco, to share his favorite taco stands in the Downtown LA  and beyond. Here are his mouth-watering selections.

Downtown Area

B.S. Taqueria

Where: 514 W. 7th St.

Scott says: B.S. Taqueria and Chef Ray Garcia imports organic blue corn from Mexico, grind it in Los Angeles and hand makes truly flavorful tortillas. Try the in-house chorizo, fried papas, and crispy jack cheese taco. Feeling salty? The juicy saltiness of the award-winning clam and lardo taco can win over the most stubborn shellfish skeptic. And you've never had anything like their rice and beans in the signature paperbag—toasted rice, garbanzo and cannelini beans with cotija and fresno chiles.

Casa la Doña

Where: 800 S Main St.

Scott says: Well-seasoned al pastor tacos with fresh and juicy pineapple made with homemade corn tortillas. On Taco Tuesday, try the slow-roasted cochinita pibil pork. Top it off with one of 18 different types of homemade salsas made fresh every day and ranging from mild to rip-your-lips-off hot.

Guerrilla Tacos

Where: 826 E 3rd St.

Scott says: The roasted cauliflower taco with almond chile, dates, and almonds. Feeling cheesy? Try the squash blossom quesadilla with beets and pine nuts.

Where: 541 S Spring St.

Scott says: The mini tacos sampler of six. Don’t miss the bistek en salsa roja and cochinita pibil on handmade tortillas. Top it with habanero salsa and wash it down with a glass of horchata.

Mexicali Tacos and Co

Where: 702 N. Figueroa St.

Scott says: The surf and turf taco is delicious. The perfectly cooked filet mignon is combined with something Chef Esdras calls 'forest crab'. It is a fresh and herby-type of forage situation.

Where: 208 E 8th St.

Scott says: Try the grilled Sonoran-style tacos with carne asada and the homemade flour tortilla quesadilla with the artisan chorizo from @thechoriman.

Los Angeles Metro Area

La Azteca Totilleria

Where: 4538 East Cesar E. Chavez Ave.

Scott says: Get the breakfast tacos made from homemade tortillas.

Leos Tacos Truck

Where: 1515 S La Brea Ave.

Scott says: This spot is a classic.  Look out for the orange-colored food truck with flashing signs. Get the monster al pastor trompo with fresh piña.

Tacos El Jefe

Where:  2377 W Pico Blvd.

Scott says: Look for a brightly-lit taco truck next to the lavenderia. Try the el pastor street tacos.

Tacos El Pecas

Where: 1001-1021 S. Soto St.

Scott says: Street tacos with al pastor.

Tire Shop Taqueria

Where: 4069 S Avalon Blvd.

Scott says: Delicious and smoky al carbon grilled asada and al pastor served on thin hand-pressed Tijuana-style tacos with guac smear.
