As the Internet Retailer Conference + Exhibit 2017 gears up in Chicago this week, our team at Gorilla Group wanted to embrace the influx of travelers with homegrown tips on where and what to see during your stay. We’ve compiled a list of seven exceptional places that we love, and think you’ll enjoy, too. Take a look:
1. Swift & Sons
Swift & Sons offers a blend of ‘old’ and ‘new’ Chicago dining. The restaurant sits in a former meat storage facility in the historic manufacturing and warehousing district of Chicago and has been renovated into a sprawling steakhouse with the Cold Storage raw seafood bar and ample seating. Swift & Sons is walking distance to a number of West Loop destinations for an after dinner drink, such as The Aviary (innovative and expensive craft cocktails), Kaiser Tiger (beer garden), and The Lunatic, The Lover & The Poet (tri-level wine bar).
Chicago has expanded its Riverwalk, which now runs from Navy Pier to the south branch of the Chicago River. Soak up the architecture, grab a cocktail at one of several riverside establishments and get some exercise in the process.
3. The Art Institute of Chicago
The Art Institute of Chicago is one of the country’s oldest and largest museums, with an impressive permanent collection and frequently changing temporary exhibitions. Located in Grant Park, the museum is a short walk from the iconic Chicago Cloud Gate (‘Bean’) Sculpture in Millennium Park. After you take in the cultural sites, head across the street to the recently renovated Chicago Athletic Association and grab a drink at Cindy’s Rooftop for a beautiful view of the park and Lake Michigan.
4. Magnificent Mile
If you love a little old-fashioned brick and mortar shopping, you can find nearly any major department store or retailer along the ‘Magnificent Mile’ of North Michigan Avenue. If you’re looking to escape the downtown area and check out independent boutiques, head northwest and spend an afternoon exploring the specialty shops, galleries, furniture stores, and vintage destinations in Wicker Park and Bucktown.
5. Wrigley Field
For baseball fans looking to experience the long-awaited World Series Champions defend their title, the Chicago Cubs will be in town playing at Wrigley Field throughout the week of IRCE. The historic ballpark is surrounded by a lively neighborhood, Wrigleyville, with countless bars and restaurants to grab a bite before or after a game.
6. Second City Theatre
Chicago is home to one of the most well-known and respected improv comedy destinations in the country. The Second City Theater has a long list of famous alumni including Bill Murray, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Steve Carell, Stephen Colbert, so you never know if you’ll be seeing the next big thing in comedy at your show.
For those looking for a taste of the tropics in Chicago, we recommend trying out festive Latin American restaurant Carnivale for AvaTopia, an IRCE event hosted by Magento ecosystem partner, Avalara.
