Calling all Developers: 4 Things You Need to Know to Sell Extensions on Magento Marketplace

January 22, 2018

So, you’re a Partner, SI, or Developer and you want to get started on Magento Marketplace and list your extension, but you’re a little confused about where to start? Never fear, we can help you get this ball rolling and you’ll be selling your extensions on Magento Marketplace in no time!

1. Where do I go? What do I do?

First, make sure you have an account to submit your extensions in our Magento developer portal. Read more about the developer account and all the tools available to you here.

Then check out our Getting Started Guide which breaks out the step by step process of submitting and selling for developers who are new to Magento Marketplace, including our Extension Quality Program (EQP).

2. Wait, what is EQP? Why do I have to do it?

EQP is our Extension Quality Program and it ensures that only the best extensions make it onto our Magento Marketplace for buyers to purchase from you. We rigorously test each extension to meet Magento standards and best practices—making sure you can trust our site as the #1 source for best in class extensions.

3. How does the process work?

Before we get into the specifics, keep in mind that if you have Shared Packages – they must pass technical review before they can be referenced by your extension. Read more here.

  • Business Review: First, we want to know a little about your product. This is the preliminary review to ensure you are offering distinct functionality which will solve a common problem and appeal to a broad Magento audience.

  • Technical Review: Once you have passed Business Review and uploaded your code, it will go through automated install tests. Once those are passed, it will move to manual QA. This is where your developer will likely be involved and assisting with any errors our QA team may find.

  • Marketing Review: Ok, you’ve made it to the last step! Once the code is all checked out, we have to make sure the information in both your listing and company profile is accurate and that our merchants will clearly understand the value your extension provides and the functionality they will gain by purchasing it. Here are some helpful guidelines.

4. A few important things before you upload your extension and enter into the EQP process:

Validate/verify your extensions before submitting them!

  • See our Magento Marketplace Tools script on GitHub (Note, it is only a package validation tool for Magento 2 extensions.)

  • Utilize our code sniff tools as well to ensure you meet coding standards, view here

  • Your ‘Vendor Name’ field must be lowercase and without spaces. IE – If your company name is “I Love Cats’, your vendor name is “ilovecats”

  • Review our technical guide for Magento Marketplace to see our specifications
