Magento Masters Spotlight: Sander Mangel
February 9, 2017
2016 was the inaugural year of our new top contributor program: Magento Masters. Many have asked what it takes to be a Magento Master, so we figured it would be great to spotlight our 2016 Magento Masters and let you get to know them and why they decided to get involved and contribute within the Magento Community.
Let's get to know Sander Mangel, Technical Lead at FitForMe:
Hi, I’m Sander. I’m a Magento Master 2016.
What might the Magento community not know about you?
One of the things that the Magento Community might not know about me is that I love to cook. It’s one of the things that I do to relax. I love to go to the market to get some ingredients and then, in the evening, make a special dinner, invite some friends, and have some wine. For me, that’s the best thing there is.
What is one piece of advice you would give other developers?
One of the things that I truly live by, and would love to pass on to other developers, is that community is so important. You can be a good developer and live on your own island—don’t get any input from the community, don’t connect to other people—but once you start to talk to others, hear their ideas, and share knowledge, a whole new world opens up for you. You can actually be a great developer. Always take the chance to reach out to others and listen to what they have to say.
If you could ask anyone at Magento a question, who would it be? What would you ask?
For me, it would be Alan Kent, someone I hold in high regard. I would love to know his thoughts on what Magento would look like if he had a clean slate. What kind of technology would he use to make Magento ready for 2020 and beyond? I think that would be fascinating. I had the honor of talking to him a couple times and his vision on technology is so fascinating. I would love to hear more about that.
Who do you hope to see as a Magento Master in 2017 and why?
The kind of person I would like to see as a Magento Master in 2017, is a hard question. There are so many people that do deserve it. I would love to see someone that has been previously unknown to a big part of the community. They should actually get the chance to get out there and make their mark on the wider community rather than just the one in their region or country.
