The United States Postal Service makes periodic changes to their APIs. The most recent change went into effect on September 7. The next update is slated to go into effect on September 28. Details on the API changes are provided on the USPS website.

September 7 Update
This update is relatively minor and includes:

  • Update of country name for Montenegro and Tokelau (Western Samoa)

  • Update of method names for Media Mail (now Media Mail Parcel) and Library Mail (Library Mail Parcel)

September 28 Update
RateV3 API will be retired and replaced with RateV4 API

Magento Review of API Updates
Magento has reviewed and tested these updates and created patches to enable full compatibility with the September 7 update. Once you have installed the patch, no further action will be required and you will continue receiving USPS rates even after the September 28 update.

  • EE 1.11.x
    SUPEE-4334 (previous patches MAGEBP–706 + SUPEE-1868)

  • EE 1.12.x (& CE 1.7)
    SUPEE-4334 (previous patch SUPEE–1868)

  • EE 1.13.0.0 – 1.13.0.2 (& CE 1.8)
    SUPEE-4334 (previous patch SUPEE–1868)

  • EE 1.13.1.0 – 1.14.x (& CE 1.9)
    SUPEE-4291

Patch Downloads

As listed above, the new patches need to be installed on previous USPS patches issued in 2012 and 2013. Please make sure the previous patches are in place for the version of Magento software that you currently run on.

Please Note the Following Exceptions

  • Merchants on Magento versions EE 1.10.x and lower should contact Magento support for information on patches

  • Magento Community Edition 1.6 and earlier versions will no longer receive USPS rates after September 28th since those versions of Magento use USPS RateV3 API, which will be retired. We recommend upgrading to a newer version of Magento Community Edition to benefit from multiple functionality changes and quality improvements in recent versions

If you have questions or need further assistance, please contact Magento support.

Also, Magento Platinum Partner WebShopApps conducted their own review, and the results can be found on their blog.

If you have additional questions about the USPS API or associated service changes, we recommend that you contact the USPS directly.
